Day 22 - Villers-Bretonneux and Drive to Gent

Day 22 - We slept in after our busy day touring Normandy and packed up just in time to vacate the room by 10. The skies were overcast and a light drizzle of rain started just as we left. The Garmin told us we had a 5 hour drive and it was right.
We decided to drive straight through to Villers- Bretonneux which was about 3 hours from Bayeux. The auto-routes make it easy, apart from having to be mindful to keep out of the 'fast lane'. Found the Australian War Memorial which is located about 5 minutes out of the village on a beautiful hillside looking out over the countryside. It was freezing as a wind was blowing and while we were there it rained and then the sun was shining. We walked along the lines of headstones and climbed up the steps of the Memorial to the look-out. They were preparing the Memorial for Anzac Day next week. The village of Villers- Bretonneux has many streets named after Australian cities and towns - it was odd see Rue Melbourne.
Then found another McDonalds to defrost in and continued on our way to Gent, another 2 hours by car. By this time it was raining heavily and road visibility was poor. Richard did very well to drive as the traffic doesn't slow down and Belgium is the Semi-trailer hub of Europe. Made it to Gent by 6pm and found our accommodation - a very nice studio in the historical part of Gent. The owner was so helpful telling us what to see and where to shop. We dined at a local restaurant and enjoyed the local specialty - a stew dish. We all were very tired and went to bed early ready to see Gent and Brugges tomorrow.
